Eco Enzyme: A good way to reduce organic waste

In general, non-organic waste will be collected for sale, processing and has economic value. However, organic waste can also be reused in an easy way, namely turning it into Eco Enzyme.

So, what is Eco Enzyme?

Households are one of the producers of organic waste. Organic waste is waste that comes from the remains of living things which can decompose easily, naturally without the need for human intervention. Examples of organic waste generated from households are fruit, food waste, vegetables, rice washing water, dry leaves, used oil, and animal waste.

Eco enzyme is a natural liquid resulting from the fermentation of organic waste such as sugar or molasses, fruit or vegetable waste, and water (AC exhaust, rainwater, tap water) which has many uses.

The discoverer of eco enzyme is Dr. Rosukon Poompanvong. He is a founder of the Thai Organic Agriculture Association and has been conducting research since the 1980s.

Then, eco enzyme was widely introduced by Dr. Joean Oon who is a Naturopathy researcher from Penang, Malaysia. Dr. Rosukon Poompanvong makes eco enzyme from household organic waste so that it can be used as an organic cleaner, pesticide, and so on. Eco enzyme produces environmentally friendly products, because basically, it is processed from organic ingredients. Eco enzyme is easily decomposed and is not harmful to the environment or humans.

Why Do We Need Eco Enzyme?

Enzymes convert ammonia into nitrate (NO3), a natural hormone and nutrient for plants. Meanwhile it converts CO2 into carbonate (CO3) which is beneficial for marine plants and marine life.

Below are other reasons why we need to consider making eco enzymes:

  • Economical: Turn kitchen waste into DIY natural household cleaners.

  • Reduces pollution: Methane gas released from discarded trash can trap 21x more heat than CO2, worsening global warming.

  • Air purify: Cleans the air from toxins, pollution and removes odors

  • Many uses: Household cleaner, insecticide, antiseptic, body care, fertilizer etc

How to Make Eco Enzyme

If you want to switch from using chemicals to a more natural alternative, eco enzyme is the choice.

Apart from being natural and not posing any dangerous risks, making eco enzyme is the same as reducing the production of household waste or waste. Making Eco Enzyme is also easy and can be done at home.

Tools and materials for making eco enzyme:

  • Organic waste, namely any leftover vegetables and fruit that are still in good condition and not the result of cooking. You can use orange peel, lime, cucumber, apple, lemongrass, or other vegetables. Then cut all the remaining vegetables and fruit into small pieces.

  • The sugar used is palm sugar, coconut sugar, palm sugar, liquid molasses, or dry molasses. It is not recommended to use granulated sugar because it is not pure sugar.

  • Water, you can use gallon water, well water, tap water, rain water, or air conditioning waste water.

  • Airtight plastic container. It is highly recommended to use plastic containers rather than glass. Because glass containers can be at risk of breaking due to fermentation microbial activity.

Benefits of Eco Enzyme:

1. As a multi-purpose cleaning fluid

The liquid produced through eco enzyme processing can be used in household activities such as cleaning the house, cleaning clothes, and even for washing fruit and vegetables. By using eco enzyme, it means avoiding the use of chemicals. Examples of uses of eco enzyme in the household:

  • Eliminates bad odours, mold and dirt in the kitchen and bathroom

  • Anti-bacterial and viral

  • Helps repel insects

  • Eliminates pet odours

  • Helps eliminate ticks.

The way to apply eco enzyme to clean the house is to mix eco enzyme liquid with water. The storage time is only 7 days, this is because bacteria will grow in the water and damage the cleaning solution.

2. As plant fertilizer

Eco enzyme also has benefits as plant fertilizer. Eco enzyme liquid functions to fertilize soil and plants, eliminate pests, and can help improve the quality of fruit and vegetables. The way to apply eco enzyme is to mix 30 ml of the liquid with 2 litres of water, then spray or water it on the soil or plants.

To use eco enzyme liquid, it must be mixed with water, this is because if you use 100% eco enzyme liquid it can turn the soil into acid and the plants will burn from within.

3. As a Pest Repellent

Eco enzyme is very effective in repelling plant pests. Apart from repelling pests, eco enzyme can also be used to repel animals around the house which are quite annoying, such as ants, flies, cockroaches, mosquitoes and other insects. The way to apply eco enzyme for pests is by mixing 500 ml of water into 15 ml of eco enzyme liquid. Then spray on the desired area.

4. Helps in preserving the environment

Eco enzyme is also useful in preserving the environment. Why is that? This is because eco enzyme contains compounds that are very good for the environment. This is very different from cleaning products sold commercially. Cleaning products generally contain chemical compounds that are not friendly to humans or the environment.

These chemical compounds are, ammonia, chlorine, phosphate, nitrate and other compounds. Using commercial cleaning products will pollute the environment, soil and air. Meanwhile, the use of 1 litre of eco enzyme liquid is claimed by researchers to be able to clean river water.
